Finding your word for 2014

We turned on the TV this morning to watch the Rose Parade, and the news commentators were discussing the trend for 2014...

Pick one word that is your motto for the new year.  Not two words, no phrases; choose one word.

Peter and I both thought for awhile- choosing one word is difficult!  I had several little phrases, like, "be more spontaneous," or "cherish every moment," or "enjoy the little things."

So my mind kept returning to the word that I can't escape, the word that encompasses my thoughts...

RECOVERY.

I was going to try and avoid it, because I wanted a word that was attainable daily, a word that would give me hope and peace and remind me to live in the present.  Recovery can be daunting and seem out of reach some days, and I wanted to remain optimistic.

But I read the definition and realized that the word is nothing short of perfection for 2014.

Recovery: "the regaining of or possibility of regaining something lost or taken away."

Every day we fight this disorder,  we are attempting to regain our lives prior to Autism.  I could argue that normalcy was taken away from us, but then again, every family has their own "normal."  So instead of claiming that normalcy was taken away, I am going to view it as something lost...

and if it is lost, that means I can find it again.

Peter and I started watching Parenthood from the first season...we had never seen the beginning episodes when Max was diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.  We have identified with this show on so many levels- the older sister who says that her whole life has been altered around her brother's needs, the arguments with diagnosis and treatment plans, and dealing with the news that your son has a disorder.  In this specific episode, the husband asks the wife after hearing the diagnosis, "What are we going to do?"  She tells him, "Now we get to work."

So here are a few quotes to live by for 2014..

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us."- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Courage does not always roar.  Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'"

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall."

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it."- Helen Keller

"Fall down seven times, stand up eight."

So we can either hide from our fears, from our challenges, from our hardest moments, or we can face them.  As the Parenthood actress said, we get to work....and that will make us strong.

We will feel the best, the strongest, the most apt when we know that we took a step in the right direction.  We faced our fears and the unknown; and everything that someone may have told us was impossible,

IS possible.

Recovery can happen...and we will make it happen.  We will not only recover from Autism and PANDAS, but we will recover our relationships, our family time, our schedules, and our appreciation for small victories.

So as 2014 begins, challenge yourself to do one thing daily that scares you.  There will be a group of people telling you that you can't do it, that it isn't possible, and that you will fail;

and that is where you step ahead and say...

watch me.
