Challenging Days

Since a new thearpist started at home this week and last Thursday morning started at 5 AM, we have had a rough few days.  School was especially tough lastThursday, as you can see below from the ABA therapist's notes...

Areas of Skill Deficit Addressed Domain Program Target/Prompt Score Comments General Challenging Behaviors/Barriers to Learning Stims: __30_/hr(coloring, walking to science) Non-compliance: __2/hr(music). When prompted to participate in alphabet song, Hunter hit therapist 3 times. Therapist ignored and had him stand with class for remainder of song. During music Hunter said he didn't like the song and began to scream, hit and kick therapist. Therapist moved him to a corner of the classroom where he sat and screamed and cried for 5 min. then after asking calmly if he could go to the bathroom, therapist walked him to the bathroom. At end of day during story time, Hunter got upset because his teacher accidentally said that Hunters mom was coming to read to class. When she told him she made a mistake and his mom already read to class he shouted its not fair and took off shoe and sock, therapist stopped him before he took of other shoe and had to take him into hallway until he stopped screaming. New Programs Introduced Parent Concerns Therapist Concerns Hunter ate all his lunch, he laid very still at naptime and fell asleep. Hunter gave a nice note to friend Molly and during recess played hide and seek and on the tire swing for 20 min with her. The new therapist indicated that we would see a few weeks of increased non-compliance and agitation, due to the change and demands placed on him.  Here is her note from the first day...

Second time was non-compliance when told to write name and third time was when the therapist's phone died. New Programs Introduced Parent Concerns Therapist Concerns Hunter did well earning tokens to get to listen to songs on his therapist's phone. He got great scores on all programs, keep up the good work Hunter!

Yesterday, we took Paige to the doctor to get her stitches out and we were late to school...not the plan, but unfortunately, things don't always go as expected.  Hunter had been playing the ipad during the long doctor visit to keep him occupied, and did not want to give it up when we arrived at school.  I knew I had to get Paige to her school, so I wasn't as calm and centered as I usually am, and he would not get out of the car.  Finally, when I got him out, he had a complete crying, screaming, kicking, hitting meltdown in the lobby of the school and even his ABA therapist had a hard time calming him down.  He had missed his morning routine, and it was detrimental.  After school, due to a few morning changes, I had to switch my therapy around so I didn't get home until almost 8.  Hunter was still awake, and ended up crying and yelling, "it's not fair!" until about 9:30.  Singing, holding, rocking, nothing was working.  He was so upset and I think his day was so different that he could not turn his brain off to the changes.

I so felt like screaming right alongside of him, "It's not fair!"  I had seen so many children that day playing, riding scooters, giving hugs, running carelessly...I can't explain how badly I want that for my son.  I want him to enjoy life and realize how wonderful friendships and relationships are for the soul, and be able to roll with the changes that occur.  Life can't be the same everyday!

Hoping for a turn around this weekend and am most definitely willing to leave these days behind.
