United We Stand, Divided We Fall

I will admit upfront that I am not a politician by any means.  I don't follow all of the debates, I don't read every news article, and I don't have time to bantor on social media about my choice for the president.  That being said, I did, however, take time this election period to research which candidate would support one of my top concerns, the rise in Autism.  Who would give the most time, energy, and appropriate funding to battle this national epidemic?

This morning, as I scrolled through Facebook and realized how divided my groups of friends were, I also pondered about the time and money we have spent degrading one another and "standing up for what we believe in."

6 billion: The total amount spent on this election, according to an estimate by the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics. That's $700 million more than the previous "most expensive election" in history—2008—and includes money spent by the campaigns, outside groups, and independent organizations (source: "Wire.")

SIX. BILLION. DOLLARS.  What Autism researchers would do for six billion dollars.  Or in all actuality, what they would do for a mere portion of that funding to find answers for so many of us families dealing with the struggles and hardships of raising a child with a disability.

As a nation, we need to collaborate with all parties, all views, all people...when we experience a division, we break down.  There will no doubt be days of continued democracy and accusations, but when you step away from the hype, we still are left with immense problems...and not one person chosen to the run the country will be able to solve them all.

I voted.  I did my part as an American citizen and voiced my rights.  Now I will do my part to raise my family with the utmost respect for all people, regardless of the differences.  I hope that as a country we can unite and return the focus to the bigger picture.
